The Lee County Professional Guides Association was formed in 1994 by Captain Steve Waugh to provide a voice for the many professional charter captains in our area. Besides Capt. Waugh as President, the other original officers were Capt. Skip Dunn, Capt. Gary Bonacci, Capt. Dickie Younger, Capt. Mike Beardon and Capt. Doug Objartel.
In 1994 a sign had been erected at the Punta Rassa ramp saying that no commercial activity was allowed. Shortly after that Capt. Waugh contacted other charter captains in the area and the LCPGA was born. After pursuing their right to work from the public ramp, the Lee County Attorney’s office issued a letter stating just that. Community service soon followed and the group even furnished materials and labor to rebuild the decking and bad pilings at Punta Rassa. Today the LCPGA still helps clean the ramp and police the area for litter and used fishing line and also provides free fishing days for veterans and children.
The Association is committed to community service and still provides a much needed voice for the professional charter services here in Southwest Florida.
